On May 27, 2023, at 13:54 hours, Ambulance 259 was returning from Holy Cross Hospital with an ALS provider from MCFR RE-709 when the ambulance came upon a car along the side of Interstate 270 northbound with a bystander that flagged them down. The crew quickly realized that the driver of the vehicle was unconscious. The crew made contact with the patient who was pulseless and not breathing. The patient’s wife advised that he was complaining of indigestion earlier in the day. Master Firefighter Paramedic Jonathan Johnson called for additional resources while the BLS providers removed the patient from the car and started High Performance CPR. Crews moved the patient into the ambulance where they continued to provide care and defibrillations for approximately 15 minutes before regaining a pulse. ROSC was confirmed and crews started transport to Shady Grove Hospital continuing care throughout transport.

The patient arrived at Shady Grove Hospital with a pulse and spontaneous respirations.

The fast recognition and the willingness of the crews to aid citizens of the community directly impacted the outcome of this patient.
