On May 21, 2023, at 10:25 am, 911 Emergency Communications Manager Phillip Petry and Emergency Communications Recruit Madison Ambush received a 911 call for service. As the EMD ProQA protocols were initiated, the caller reported the patient was neither awake nor breathing. The information was sent to dispatch and units were dispatched to the scene within 8 seconds. The caller, an off-duty police detective, and her husband had performed the Heimlich maneuver without success. The dispatcher provided CPR instructions and advised them to check the airway for food. Ambulance 39, Engine 33, Medic 2, EMS 901 were dispatched to the scene, a local restaurant, for a choking. The patient was eating breakfast with his daughter when he choked on a piece of his food. As the situation worsened an off-duty Fire Marshal and a Nurse Practitioner who were in the restaurant assisted in providing aid to the patient. The patient became unconscious, and CPR was performed until EMS crews arrived on the scene. Ambulance 39 arrived on the scene to find a male patient lying on the restaurant floor in cardiac arrest. The BLS crew took over CPR. Engine 33 and Medic 2 arrived on the scene and continued life saving measures by removing the lodged food from the patient’s airway. The patient regained return of spontaneous circulation. The patient was transferred to the ambulance and transported to Frederick Health Hospital. The patient regained consciousness and was asking questions to crew.
The patient arrived at Frederick Health Hospital with a pulse and responding to crews.
The fast activation of 911 along with the lifesaving interventions provided by Emergency Communications and the restaurant patrons as well as the high-performance CPR continued by our BLS providers and the ALS crews removing the food from a completely blocked airway without a doubt had a direct impact on the outcome of this patient.
