On June 12, 2023, at 16:59, Frederick County 911 Emergency Communications Specialist Mercede Petry received a 911 call for a male having a medical emergency with a known cardiac issue. The son reported the male was unresponsive on the floor breathing heavily. The information was immediately transferred to dispatch as the call taker remained on the line and provided CPR instructions. Deputy Sheriff Zachary Myers arrived on the scene and took over chest compressions from the family. Ambulance 259, Engine 251, Paramedic Engine 713, and EMS 901 were dispatched for an unconscious person. The call was upgraded to a cardiac arrest while units were enroute. The crews arrived on the scene to find the Deputy Sheriff providing CPR with family members. The family advised the patient had just returned from a walk and upon return asked for help and fell to the floor. Crews applied the Lucas device while managing the airway and the patient was defibrillated a total of three times. Montgomery County Paramedic Engine 713 began ACLS interventions. The patient regained a pulse and began to breath on his own. The paramedic transmitted the EKG which showed the patient was having a myocardial infarction. The patient was transported to Frederick Health Hospital. The patient arrived at Frederick Health Hospital, conscious and alert after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. The patient was taken to the Cardiac Cath Lab and received percutaneous coronary intervention with three stents in his Right Coronary Artery. He was discharged home on June 14th with no neurological deficits. The fast activation of 911, the Emergency Communication Specialist providing CPR instructions, and the continuation of high-performance CPR by the Frederick County Sheriff’s Deputy and EMS clinicians, enabled the patient to regain a pulse. The quick notification to Frederick Health Hospital allowed them to be prepared to receive the patient.
