On January 23, 2023, at 15:37, Emergency Communications received a 911 call for service. The 911 call taker determined the patient was unconscious and not breathing. The call information was immediately transferred to dispatch as the call taker remained on the line and started the Cardiac Arrest protocol. The caller stated the patient was in a chair, and she couldn’t move him to the floor. The call taker, following the protocols, advised her to grab the patient’s feet a nd pull him off the chair to his back. CPR instructions were given to the caller utilizing the compression monitor tool in ProQA to ensure compression rate and consistency while encouraging the caller to focus on CPR. Lt. Brandon Seyfried from the Libertytown Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene and took over CPR until EMS arrived. Ambulance 179, Engine 172, Medic 17, EMS 901 were dispatched for a cardiac arrest. Upon arrival the crews identified that the patient had been complaining of shortness of breath and coughing. The BLS crew took over CPR and managed the airway as Engine 172 and Medic 17 continued life saving measures. The patient was defibrillated 3 times and administered ACLS medications before regaining a pulse. The paramedic identified the patient was having a myocardial infarction and notified Frederick Health Hospital to activate a code heart.

The patient arrived at Frederick Health Hospital with a pulse and spontaneous respirations. He was treated at FHH and subsequently transferred to another hospital for cardiac rehab.

The fast activation of 911, the Emergency Communication Specialist providing CPR instructions, and the continuation of high-performance CPR by the EMS clinicians, enabled the patient to regain a pulse. The quick notification to Frederick Health Hospital allowed them to be prepared for the patient and increase the chances of survival.
