VOLUNTEER FIRE & RESCUE SERVICES

One of our slogans is “You need us. WE want you.” We educate our citizens that being a first responder affords a volunteering opportunity like none other with the greatest strength being part of our fire service family. There is and always will be a need for more volunteers. The recruitment and retention of volunteers in Frederick County remains a top priority. The Division continues to recruit new volunteers on-site at various events via an extensive advertising campaign which includes television and radio commercials, advertisements, flyers, in person, presentations, including a recruitment website, www.GearUpFireRescue.com. The success of this campaign is a combined effort between the volunteer recruiter and our individual volunteer corporations working together to welcome new volunteer members into the fire and rescue family.

All volunteers serve an important role by assisting with incident response, managing operations, running intradepartmental affairs, and fundraising efforts. All these tasks are necessary to provide a high-quality fire, rescue and emergency medical service. Fundraising efforts remain as a significant part of the volunteer fire and rescue personnel’s lives, and a major factor in supporting the operations of each of the individual corporations. Annually, fire and rescue companies receive county government funding to support their operational activities. In 2014, the county moved from a line-item budgeting system to a funding matrix with quarterly appropriations. The matrix system is calculated using as a base funding amount for type of service provided (fire/EMS or combination), operational square footage, apparatus ownership and call load. The amount provided to each station is calculated based on estimated call and response data. After the end of the calendar year and before the budget is finalized, the matrix is adjusted accordingly with actual call volume data. Volunteer corporations continue to upgrade equipment, purchasing new apparatus and support vehicles. Volunteers have designed, purchased, and placed into service several fire and rescue apparatus in 2024. These individual corporations used money through grants, loans, donations, and fundraisers to purchase various types of apparatus. It takes many hours of planning to have fire and rescue apparatus designed and built from the ground up. The dedication and hours of work these volunteer companies put in to ensure apparatus is available and ready to answer the call is a testament to their continual dedication to the citizens of Frederick County.

United Steam Fire Engine Company placed in service Rescue Squad 3, a custom built 2024 Pierce Arrow XT Walk-In Rescue.
