Command Competency Program
After approximately 18 months of development which included, visiting other jurisdictions in the COG region, standing up a focus group, policy development, simulation design and development, and beta testing of the material, the command competency program launched its inaugural offering(s) in the late summer of 2024. While attendance was optional this year, participants were able to experience what will be expected when the program and policy officially take effect on January 1, 2025. In all, 58 chief officers, both career and volunteer, participated in the evaluations that consisted of two simulated emergency scenarios. The divisions Command Competency Instructor continuously evaluates all box alarms and other large-scale incidents. This includes gathering audio recordings, photos, videos and information gathered through Q & A sessions with incident commanders and other emergency responders. In 2024, the Command Competency Instructor completed 45 Q&A’s on working fires. This is paramount for the growth of an incident commander and has already shown its operational value. The information gleaned from these sessions is then crafted into the training scenarios and training information that is periodically disseminated to all personnel.
The Command Competency Instructor also conducts continuing education training for both career and volunteer members in the form of MAYDAY Management Training, Tactical Worksheet Training, Policy Review Quizzes, and monthly “Tips n Tricks” command related t raining bulletins.
