National Fire Academy

Frederick County provides support for the National Fire Academy (NFA) Emmittsburg with several events each year. The National Fallen Fighters Memorial Weekend is held annually and is the largest event we support. In 2024 we provided transportation vans for families and staff, EMS coverage throughout the weekend in collaboration with Vigiant Hose Company, logistical support, and manpower. We also move staffed apparatus to provide increased support to Northern Frederick County in anticipation of increased call volume. This year NFA hosted the U.S. Fire Administrator’s Summit on Fire Prevention and Control and the Science Alliance’s Science to the Station Symposium, an educational conference that spanned over a week at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg. DFRS provided transportation and manpower to transport dignitaries from around the globe to and from the airports in the region. The NFA also hosted a Winter Retreat, a National Fallen Firefighters Foundation sponsored Fire Hero Family Winter Retreat. This weekend event is specifically for Fire Hero families. DFRS again provided transportation to and from the numerous events.

Frederick County is fortunate to be home to the National Fire Academy and DFRS along with the Vigilant Hose Company are honored to assist them with the many services they provide the fire service around the world.

Safe Kids Frederick

Keeping kids safe remains a priority of our organization. DFRS partnered with the Maryland Department of Health to provide several car safety seat installation checkpoints at our Northgate Fire Station #29, located at: 37 Thomas Johnson Drive, Frederick, MD 21702. In 2024, the checkpoint technicians completed 74 car seat checks for local Frederick County residents. The 2025 checkpoints will again be held at Northgate Fire Station 29. Due to the demand from the citizens, this event is transitioning to a monthly event to be held on the Fourth Thursday of every month from 3pm – 6pm.
