Special Operations (continued)
The Hazardous Incident Response Team (HIRT) or “Haz - Mat” Team responds to various types of chemical, biological and radiological incidents. In addition to Hazardous Materials responses, HIRT members are certified in and respond to confined space, trench, and structural collapse incidents in support of the Technical Rescue Team.
Hazardous Incident Response Team 2023 projects and accomplishments
• Developed specifications for the replacement of the existing HIRT Support vehicle that is expected to be placed in service soon. • Successfully secured CIP funding for scheduled replacement of the HIRT meters. This multi-year funding will ensure the team remains on the cutting edge of metering, monitoring, and detection capabilities. • With the assistance of Frederick County’s Emergency Management and the support of DFRS, a state grant for approximately $77,000 was awarded to the team. NFPA compliant flash protection PPE was purchased for HIRT members to improve operational safety during hazardous materials incidents. • Several HIRT members took advantage of various advanced training opportunities across the region, further enhancing the team’s knowledge and response capabilities.
