CDL Drivers Training Program

The Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)Training Program continues to deliver convenient and quality training to all interested members throughout Frederick County Government. In 2024, the CDL Drivers Training Program successfully assisted 138 county employees in obtaining their commercial driver’s license s. Of the 138 employees licensed, 97 were DFRS employees, with 66 obtaining a Class A license and 39 obtaining a Class B license. Additionally, the CDL Drivers Training Program purchased a 2018 Freightliner Cascadia Tractor Trailer to serve as the designated vehicle for Class A driver’s license training. Having a dedicated vehicle has paid dividends to the drivers training program, as well as the other training programs with its ability to haul large quantities of training materials.

In 2024, the CDL Training Coordinator in conjunction with leaders from other county agencies completed the daunting certification process of becoming an approved CDL Testing Agency. This involved a rigorous review of our CDL training program, our drivers training course, and our records management processes by State DOT regulators. It also required having select driver training instructors complete additional state sponsored training to become certified Maryland CDL Examiners. Reaching this milestone means employees who complete our CDL training program will no longer need to go to their local MVA and pass a driving test to receive their license, our examiners will administer the test. Students who pass receive a certificate from our coordinator that they take to their local MVA who will then issue them a new license. We are happy to report that we will begin these tests the first week of 2025.
