Investigations Section
Internal Investigations
When required, The Office of the Fire Marshal conducts internal investigations to ensure that County and Division policies and procedures effectively serve the needs of both citizens and the fire/rescue and EMS services.
Origin and Cause Investigations
Maryland law mandates the investigation of all fires and explosions to determine their origin and cause. The Office of the Fire Marshal collaborates closely with the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office, neighboring Fire Marshal offices, and other law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), as needed during these investigations. These investigations adhere to the guidelines outlined in the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) 921 Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations. Findings from origin and cause investigations may necessitate:
• Public and business education: To raise awareness and prevent future incidents • Identification of design or equipment defects: To improve product safety • Correction of code deficiencies: To ensure compliance with fire safety regulations • Recommended code modifications: To enhance the effectiveness of existing fire codes
Fire Fatalities
In 2024, there was one reported fatality due to a structure fire.
