On the evening of May 31, 2022, units from New Market District Volunteer Fire Company and surrounding fire and rescue companies were dispatched to 5414 Rotary Ave for a report of a vehicle in the water. The first arriving unit was New Market Engine 152, followed by Ambulance 158. On scene, E152’s officer established command and started communicating scene information to incoming units. The crew worked quickly to assess the situation and gather information from witnesses, which included the victims time and location last seen. A Montgomery County Police Officer witnessed the event, stating he watched the victim go under the water seconds before E152’s arrival. Realizing the victim had just submerged, FF Walsky acted without hesitation. Guided by the shore crew, he swam to the victim’s location and began to dive. He was quickly joined by FF Moller while Sgt. Klingensmith and FF Bobongo-Koud switched to a safety role. Together, Walsky and Moller found the victim and quickly pulled the victim to shore. Working together, the crews of Engine 152 and Ambulance 158 performed high-performance CPR and transitioned compressions to a LUCAS device allowing them to quickly move the patient to a medic unit. The successful actions taken by the responders directly involved in the incident that evening reflects highly upon their professionalism, training, and personal skills. It is my pleasure to recognize the following members of the New Market District Volunteer Fire Company with this well-deserved Unit Citation.
