On February 19, 2022, at 1354 hours units were dispatched mutual aid to Loudoun County, VA for a motor vehicle accident with entrapment in the Town of Lovettsville. Units arrived on scene to find a vehicle partially off the roadway with a tieback system in place by the Loudoun County Fire/Rescue units already on scene. The patient was found seated in the driver’s seat with a tree branch that had gone through the windshield and had impaled the patient in her abdomen. EMS crews worked diligently with the fire/rescue units on scene to provide definitive care during the extrication. While the patient was being extricated, the impaled tree branch had removed itself and EMS units worked expeditiously to manage the wound. The patient was successfully extricated within twenty minutes of arrival, placed in the ambulance and transported priority 1 to the landing zone established at Fire Station 28 in Point of Rocks, MD. Upon arrival at the landing zone, ALS established IO access, administered additional medications and transferred patient care to the crew of Air Care 3. The flight crew then successfully performed rapid sequence intubation and the patient was moved from the ambulance to the helicopter and flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital. The patient was subsequently treated and released to home from Inova Fairfax Hospital.

Without the quick response to the scene, the administration of life saving medications, and the thorough care provided, this patient would have likely had a much worse outcome.

This Unit Citation is being presented in recognition of the quick and decisive actions of personnel that contributed to a positive outcome for this patient.
