On July 7, 2022, at 11:54, units were dispatched to a residence in the Braddock Heights area for a cardiac arrest. The dispatch information reported the patient was eating a peanut butter sandwich when he began to choke. The patient stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest prior to the arrival of emergency personnel. Ambulance 129 and Engine 122 arrived on scene and confirmed the cardiac arrest. The BLS crew performed 2 cycles of CPR, placed the AED on the patient and aggressively managed the airway prior to Advanced Life Support arriving on the scene. The resuscitation efforts continued with ACLS medications administered to the patient. The patient regained a pulse within five minutes of fire/rescues arrival on the scene. Paramedic’s removed food particles from the patient’s mouth prior to securing the patient’s airway with an endotracheal tube and crews continued to provide ventilations to the patient. The patient was transferred to the ambulance and during transport to Frederick Health Hospital, the patient started to breathe on his own and opened his eyes.
