On Saturday, October 9th, 2021, at 0125hrs, units from the Westview Fire Station; A318, M31 and E311 along with EMS901 responded to the report of a shooting in the area of the 6700 block of Killdeer Court in Robin Meadows. While units were responding, Emergency Communications advised of multiple patients and to stage for the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office as the scene was not yet secure. With that information, EMS901 (Chlebowski) requested 3 additional BLS units and 2 additional ALS units, noting that both A318 and E311 had additional ALS clinicians on those units that could assist in that capacity if needed. Upon arrival, units encountered a chaotic and dynamic scene with 3 patients. Two with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso, abdomen, and lower extremities and another patient with an isolated gunshot wound to the finger. After quickly assessing the scene, triaging the 3 patients, E311A (Stansbury) requested the need for MSP Aviation for two, Priority 2 Category B patients with multiple gunshot wounds and established the Killdeer Court Command. A318 and M31 began assessing one of the critically wounded patients while the crew from E311 assessed the other. EMS901 ensured that both crews and patients had adequate supplies and provided assistance to M31. The conditions of both patients rapidly deteriorated, upgrading them to Priority 1 Category A patients by Maryland Medical Protocols. Due to the extended ETA of MSP Aviation resources, A318 and M31 determined the best course of action for their patient would be to transport by ground to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown. A318 Aide, FF Esposito drove Medic Ambulance 318 to MMC to allow Fire/Medic Nowaczyk to function as an extra ALS provider. This patient was subsequently transferred to Shock Trauma after being stabilized. E311’s patient was transferred to A39, M1 and EMS902 for subsequent medevac to Shock Trauma. Both of these patients required significant emergency surgery and are receiving follow up, rehabilitative care. The third patient was transported to a local hospital, treated, and released. The quick and decisive actions by first arriving units; A318, M31, E311 and EMS901 led to these patients’ being provided the best possible outcome for survival. Early recognition of needed additional resources and efficient, effective and quality patient care was vital to the survival of these patients.
