VOLUNTEER FIRE & RESCUE SERVICES

Volunteer corporations continue to upgrade equipment, purchasing new ambulances, engines, and support units. Fundraising efforts remain as a significant part of the volunteer fire and rescue personnel’s lives, and a major factor in supporting the operations of each of the individual corporations. In total, six corporations designed, purchased, and placed into service several fire and rescue apparatus in 2022, these individual corporations used money through grants, loans, donations, and fundraisers to purchase various types of apparatus. It takes many hours of planning to have fire and rescue apparatus designed and built from the ground up. The dedication and hours of work these volunteer companies put in to ensure apparatus is available and ready to answer the call is a testament to their continual dedication to the citizens of Frederick County.

Independent Hose Company has a rich history as Maryland's oldest volunteer fire station in continuous operation. Volunteers of the Independent Hose Company placed in service a 2022 EOne Typhoon Pumper. Engine 11 has a Cummins Engine X12 500HP, 750-gallon water tank, 1500 GPM Hale QMax single stage pump and a well thought out assortment of equipment and lower hose load. Engine 11 was purchased to enhance the fire and rescue capabilities to better serve the residents Frederick County.

Established in 1845, the United Steam Fire Engine Company is the oldest fire station in the United States operating out of the same location. Volunteers placed in service a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 2500 HD pickup and is designated as Utility 3. This unit will assist in moving personnel and equipment.

The New Market District Volunteer Fire Company protects roughly 20,000 citizens in a heavily residential first due area, along with a major interstate highway (I-70). The department has a long history of fire service excellence, and though the department has gone through rough times, it is once again a shining example of volunteerism in today’s declining volunteer fire service.
